Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Well, you asked

Any allergies, the nurse asked. “Right-to-left putts from 10 feet,” I replied. “You’re seeing your primary care, not a psychologist,” she said.

2 – He hasn’t said no, not yet anyway

Met a buddy of mine, guy who won the sixth flight net championship at his club this year. He told me he has yet to officially turn down the LIV Golf 2.0 offer that’s still on the table. “I’m not afraid of bankruptcy,” he said. “Hey, I’ve done it a few times myself.”

3 – Something I always wanted to do

As soon as I struck my golf ball and it veered dead left I let out with a “mud ball” cry. It probably wasn’t true, but I’ve seen PGA Tour guys do it, so what the heck . . .

4 – Never too early to take advantage

There are guys who start playing the leaf rule in early August.

GOLF COURSE PHOTO – Three cheers to Tom Matthews for this photo because it hits upon a pet peeve that many golfers have. That is, why are some clubs so anti-chipping at their practice greens. If the practice green is a tight squeeze and there’s a place to chip in the area of the range, it’s understood. But when there’s no place to chip at the range and your putting green has the room for it, let’s be a little forgiving. The folks here at Independence GC in Midlothian, Va., likely have a lot of fans thanks to this sign. As always, feel free to do what Tom Matthews did, just send in your photo to jim@powerfades and we’ll share it with readers.

5 – Simply the best

Primrose yellow, which is the color of the clubhouse at The Country Club, remains unmatched.

6 – Oh, and this, too

Also undefeated: The peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the back nine of your game.

7 – Sorry, can’t make it

Quickest turnoff in golf: Hey, want to play in a scramble?

8 – Your closet will thank you

It’s that time of year, folks. Consider this a PSA about autumn cleaning. You need to go through your closet and look at all those golf polos, and should there be any that you didn’t wear in 2026, you most likely didn’t wear then in 2025, either, so out they go.

9 – That bad, eh?

I asked if there were some drills I could be working on this winter and I provided a list of what needed improvement. He offered some suggestions but added, “you’ll need the winter, spring, and most of next summer.”
