Competition corner

Women’s college golf: Irlbacher shines at Yale

Nathalie Irlbacher posts sizzling 7-under 206 to win at Yale.

Standout performances were plentiful in the Yale Invitational at Yale Golf Course, but it was the effort by Boston College senior Nathalie Irlbacher of Germany that stole the show. Breaking par in each round, Irlbacher shot 70-67-69 for 7-under 206 and a five-stroke win for medalist honors.

Boston University’s Hanako Kawasaki, a senior from Vietnam, was the only other competitor to break par for 54 holes (70-71-70 for 2-under 211), finished second, while Katherine Sung of Dartmouth finished third, at 213.

It’s the team competition that ignites the passion, however, and with Irlbacher setting the pace, the Eagles totaled 866 and beat out BU and Yale, both of whom tied for second at 877.

BC also got a solid effort from Bibilani Liu, who finished tied for fourth t 214, while BU’s FLair Kuan was also T-4.

Harvard was led by Isabella Gomez, a sophomore from Colombia who shot 281 and finished T-7. Columbia’s leading scorer was Anne Walsh of Boston, who shot 232.

Men’s college golf: Jumbos rule

Jack Meehan and Travis Clauson shot 146 to tie for individual honors and teammate Mac Bredahl (148) was third to lead Tufts to a dominating victory in the Blazer Invitational at Cold Spring CC in Belchertown. The Jumbos finished 27 strokes ahead of second-place Amherst . . . . . At the Georgetown Intercollegiate, the University of Rhode Island finished seventh.
