Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Such a disappointment

What a huge letdown to get that first day of standard time, a 6:17 a.m. sunrise and the optimism of a dew-sweeping opportunity. Vibrant sunshine arrived, but so, too, did a significant frost delay. Damn

.2 – Whatever happened to dimes?

Guy tossed down his poker chip manhole cover a few feet from the cup. After doing so he asked, “Want me to move it?” To which I replied, “Goodness no. I wouldn’t want you to get a hernia.”

3 – Up, up, and away

Maybe Elon Musk will invent a golf ball with cold-gas thrusters so they can hurdle those poker chip manhole covers in the future.

4 – Not downsizing

When I told her that I wasn’t going to throw out those exquisite coffee-table books on the great golf courses of Ireland and Scotland, it bothered her greatly. I hated to compound the irritability that was in the air, so I didn’t add that what I was going to do was buy three more coffee tables for the coffee-table books.

GOLF COURSE PHOTOS – When you play Wentworth Hills you do a little bit of interstate traveling. The course is primarily in Plainville, Mass., but when you leave the 13th green and head to the 14th tee, you see a “Welcome to Rhode Island sign.” Yes, sir, the course is built on the state borders, but your trip into Rhode Island lasts for just three holes. When you leave the 16th you return to Massachusetts to play 17 and 18. You better believe it’s a conversation piece. It caught my attention during a fun round recently, but should you be similarly tickled by a golf course sign you see, as always, please sent to jim@powerfades.com and we'll share it.

5 – My favorite flavor

Toasted coconut ice cream. I’m not saying it is as exhilarating as flushing a 7-iron and chasing the ball to a pin cut back right, but it’s close.

6 – Come on, tell the truth

You’re probably wondering how in the name of Wiffy Cox I know what it feels like to flush a 7-iron.

7 – Ah, the joy of early darkness

If you’re curious about the winter blues, well, it’s tough for me to comment. I don’t know what they are. That’s because I keep myself busy marking a couple dozen golf balls for the next spring and summer. Oh, and cleaning my grooves. Now, how exciting is that?

8 – Unheralded taste

If anyone in my neighborhood passed out small bags of Boston baked beans, I’d be willing to add a special trick-or-treat evening in a heartbeat.

9 – Vernacular Dept.

Over here, they are carts and push-carts. In the UK they are buggies and trolleys. UK is 1 up. Over here we call ‘em pullovers and rainsuits. In the UK it’s common to refer to them as jumpers and waterproofs. Ouch. Two down.
