Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Re-think things

Forget January, February, and March. You should be thinking of using Florida as a get-away-from April and May cold.

2 – Man of many moods

Earlier this year, Phil Mickelson on a video told folks that he saw great things in his game for 2024. In May, he announced that he’s contemplating retirement. By July, don’t be shocked if Phil reveals plans to lead a post-Open Championship expedition to find the Loch Ness Monster.

3 – A captain’s role he could handle

Thinking out loud here, but if plans were ever to be hatched to bring Captain Kangaroo’s life story to the big screen, methinks Phil’s the guy. If the PGA of America won’t make him a captain, Hollywood should.

4 – You might want to stay away

Beware the golfer you’ve never met who wanders onto the first tee and helps set the ground rules for the money game, then casually tosses in, “and I presume we’re playing the one-ball rule.”

5 – Autographs are grossly overrated

Your second-grader signs his or her name with more style and clarity than 99.2 percent of the athletes I’ve seen.

6 – Like you’re a bowl of fire?

Nuts to these folks who critique Scottie Scheffler as boring. Honestly, have they ever looked in the mirror?

7 – Seriously?

Talor Gooch at No. 644 in the official World Rankings gets a fee ticket into the PGA Championship field? Hmm. Kerry Haigh just lost the locker room.

8 – Expand your horizons

Ah, the things you ponder when you’re six down with seven to play. Like, “maybe crocheting isn’t such a bad hobby.”

9 – Small things, big joy

A splendidly-raked bunker doesn’t show up on the scorecard. But it soothes the soul – or so I tell myself.
