Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Twice the fun

If you can’t decide whether to play golf Wednesday before Thanksgiving, or Friday after Thanksgiving, may I suggest you compromise and golf both days.

2 – Different languages

“How was your day?” she asked. “It was a double-square day,” I growled. “Sounds wonderful,” she said. Wonderful? What's wonderful about double-squares?  We've clearly got a failure to communicate.

3 – Know your birds

Which reminds me, if you’re searching for a conversation-starter for that neighborhood Christmas party in a few weeks, I’ve had great luck with this: “Did you know there’s no such thing as a double-eagle, that it’s actually an albatross?”

4 – Music to my ears

When the Elvis song pops up on the playlist . . . Memories pressed between the pages of my mind. Memories sweetened through the ages just like wine . . . I promptly rattle off the numbers in my head: 454 534 355 (38). Don't laugh; remember, standards vary from golfer to golfer.

GOLF COURSE PHOTO -- The sign might be slightly hidden by the brush but at the famed Green Monkey GC at Sandy Lane on the Bahamas there's no mistaking the steepness to this particular cliff. Cheers to longtime friend Paul Burke for the photo of this distinctive golf hole. As always, submissions are more than welcomed. Just forward to jim@powerfades.com

5 – Don’t let the warmth escape

It’s officially ski cap season. Cozy up.

6 – Categorical changes

Hey, it’s also that time of year when you assess the world around you to determine which golf partners have been relegated to conditional status.

7 – Got both of my arms up

Raise your hand if you’d like to see more punchbowl greens.

8 – The mowers will thank you

We are at the threshold of a new year, which means it’s never too soon to think about resolutions. Here’s one that is fervently put forth for adoption: Throw all your plastic tees away and go strictly wooden.

9 – Your dinner table in golf terms

I’m thinking Thanksgiving stuffing is the hybrid of the dinner table attractions. Little bit of onion, so it’s in the vegetable family; chalk it up as meat when sausage is used. The turkey is the driver, of course; it gets things going. And the putter is the gravy because it concludes your array of shots.
