Competition corner

Men pros: A road map like no other

If you want a dysfunctional look at the current pro golf landscape, consider James Piot. The 2021 U.S. Amateur champ made the inexplicable decision to sign on for LIV golf. Guaranteed money meant Piot has earned $338,000 for finishing 25th and 22nd – extraordinary, considering his pedestrian play, for sure, but needing more chances to play he teed it up at the Colorado Open. Once again mediocre, Piot finished T-42 and earned $865. No wonder he can’t wait for another lackluster performance in this week’s LIV tournament.

Men pros: The man who is always on the move

Qualifying for the U.S. Open at The Country Club at the age of 57 was an incredible feat for Fran Quinn. But what demonstrates the uncanny enthusiasm for competition that defines the man from Holden, Mass., is the fact that he followed it up with a victory in the Providence Open, then a trip overseas to get through a qualifier for the Senior Open Championship. Quinn missed the cut at Gleneagles and has only gotten into four tournaments this season on the PGA Tour Champions.

Men pros: Another qualified success

Quinn wasn’t the only New Englander to take on the challenge of a qualifier to get into the Senior Open Championship. So, too, was Braintree, Mass., native Mark Brown successful. Brown did make the cut, shooting 72-67-68-70 for a share of 16th place, and in two starts on the PGA Tour Champions, where he has limited status, Brown has earned $36,550.

Men pros: Everyone is in the mix

There’s quite a traffic jam at the Connecticut Open heading into Wednesday’s third and final round at New Haven CC. Former PGA Tour member Brett Stegmaier shot 66 Tuesday and is at 136, tied with Max Theodorakis (71) and amateur Cody Paladino (69). But three players are lurking just one back and six more are at 2-under, just two back. In other words, who is directing traffic?

Women Amateurs: Round 1 defeat

Rebecca Skoler of Needham shot 74-74 to finish T-12 in qualifying at the Women’s Western Amateur. The sophomore at the University of Virginia was ousted in Round 1 of match play, however, 2 up. Catie Schernerker, the reigning Mass Golf Women’s State Amateur champion, shot 162 and failed to qualify for match play.
