Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Bringing the family along for the roll

What’s next for Matt Fitzpatrick? Winning the PNC beside his father, Russell?

2 – Cold starts

Something about having 15 frost delays in the last three weeks makes you wonder if the dew sweepers should be renamed the ice-breakers.

3 – Not exactly a smooth process

Need a good laugh, I mean a really good laugh. The U.S. Ryder Cup Task Force turned 12 years old in December. Remember the promise – to fix a dysfunctional team structure. Once you straighten up from keeling over in laughter, you probably are asking, “OK, so what’s Plan B?”

4 – Such a little-used number, sadly

I’ve become fairly good with my number 2 in calligraphy. Dignified, methinks. Not that it’s done me much good when marking my golf scorecards. Honestly, it’s hardly inspiring to write number 6 in calligraphy.

5 – Charitable wasn’t green enough

This for-profit talk with something called PGA Tour Enterprises leaves me shaking my head. Weren’t lots and lots of people making lots and lots of profit when it was a charitable vehicle?

GOLF COURSE PHOTO – Actually, it’s not a golf course, but this week’s photo caught my eye. My immediate guess was there’s a frost delay so stay off the grass. Only the day at the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna was quite warm and sunny. My next guess was the sign meant just stay off the manicured grass because I seemed to be the only one ignoring the sign. Oh, well. You don’t have to be in Austria to find a golf course photo that makes you smile, but when you do, just send it along to jim@powerfades.com and let’s all share in the fun.

6 – Disappointing news

Frankly, hearing that LIV Golf will not play its tournament in New Orleans June 25-28 as scheduled is sort of a letdown. It figured to be exhilarating to watch the lads try to play four rounds in South Korea, four rounds in Spain, and four in the Bayou – 12 rounds of golf across 32 days and 11,500 air miles. Talk about an athletic endurance challenge.

7 – Another golf schedule to note

Trump Doral will host the PGA Tour this weekend in Miami. Trump National GC will host LIV Golf next weekend in Washington D.C. My guess is, two weekends from now a Trump course somewhere will be hosting Uncle Fred’s Broom Classic for elite sandbaggers.

8 – Find another celebratory ritual

Cheers to Nelly Korda. It’s always a hugely positive development when a great player wins a major. But this jumping into a contrived water hole, with your family no less, to celebrate the achievement needs to stop.

9 – Teammates

Such a wonderful finish to the Zurich Classic. Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick, brothers forming a great team. Got me thinking about where else we have things that go together seamlessly – like Q and U, capers and garlic, or tuba and accordian.
