Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Silliness

Let’s be adults here. There is nothing even remotely resembling what is termed the Jordan Spieth Experience. It’s sophomoric social media foofaraw to write about any such thing. Good gracious.

2 – Now that’s a word

Finally, the perfect opportunity to use foofaraw.

3 – The number and nothing but the number

Remember, when you are asked for your score on a hole, just recite the number. Nothing more. No dissertation about how a squirrel nudged your ball into the rough or else you would have made par or how a gust of wind jumped up just as you swung, after it had been dormant for your playing competitor. Number only. Thank you from scorekeepers everywhere.

4 – Old story gets older

Stewart Hagestad gets picked to his sixth straight Walker Cup. Oh, goodie, goodie gumdrops.

GOLF COURSE PHOTO -- Tom Welch sent in this photo from a golf course in England, St. Davids City GC. So much was spelled out, the tees he would play and how much he would pay. As for the rules, he could check off having his own set of clubs and his own bag, but what caught his attention -- and the reason for sending in the photo -- was the requirement that you be a "bona-fide" golfer. Much appreciated, Tom, because that's a new one to me, also. Find a photo similar to this, one that makes you chuckle? Then feel free to send it to jim@powerfades.com

5 – Let’s hope for competition

Speaking of the Walker Cup, here’s that biennial reminder that it is more a cocktail event than compeititve golf event. We’re talking an overall 40-9-1 U.S. edge over Great Britian & Ireland and the Americans are riding a five-match winning streak and an 80-50 edge since 2017. Maybe with the winner of Sunday’s U.S. Amateur, Jack Waley of England, will help GB&I's chances. But bringing in some Euros would help more.

6 – Why is it always news to them?

Let’s see if we have this right: They play the U.S. Amateur every August with the same themes – it’s for amateurs, fans can come and walk behind the competitors in the final, and the stage is most likely a classic American golf course – and every year some media act like they've discovered the wheel.

7 – In stock

An editor friend told me that publishing stock yardages is a wildly popular element so what the heck. Here’s just a snippet of mine with what is often called the “scoring club” (higher than wanted numbers included). PW (bladed) – 131 yards; PW (fatted) – 52 yards; PW (semi-shanked) – 82 yards; PW (tugged well left) – 101 yards; PW (flushed) – NA.

8 – Taking ownership

If you’re thinking, "hey, you have all the shots, sadly that’s true."

9 – Old-school, and that’s good

Scottie Scheffler has an edge to him, in a Lee Trevino sort of way – and that’s a beautiful thing if you want your masterful golfers to be committed to striping it with their own swings.
