Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – OK, so I struggled on the alleys, too

When the golf isn’t great you don’t love to share the score, but I did on a recent day. “Another rough one. I’m stuck on 92, it appears.” Alas, the reply stung: “Wow. That’s way higher than your (candlepin) bowling scores ever were.”

2 – Let this resonate

If you’re on time, you’re late. That’s a credo to live by. And here’s another: “If you’ve fixed one pitch mark, you have two more to go.”

3 – Like, enough already

When I’m in charge, here are the first two actions I’ll take to improve our quality of life: 1) Ban mock drafts. 2) Ban power rankings.

4 – Well done, lads

Huge kudos to the PGA Tour rules and competition staff for that brilliant move in the playoff at the RBC Canadian Open. Understandable that officials want the 18th hole because all the TV cameras are in place, plus the fans in the grandstands. But no one wants to see the same tee shot and the same approach to the same flagstick, so after two tries to break the tie between Ryan Fox and Sam Burns, officials chose to use the same hole but with the flagstick moved from back left to front right. The players tied again the third time around, then on the fourth try, Fox won. The fact that players were alerted and never squawked makes you realize it was a solid decision.

GOLF COURSE SIGNS: I am thrilled to know I'm not the only one who stops to admire and take photos of them. Here's one from another reader, Steve Skillman. There's a club called Royal North Devon GC in England (it's the sister club to Eastward Ho! in Chatham) that hangs this beauty in its locker room. Should you have a golf course photo and would like to share it, please sent to jim@powerfades.com.

5 – A glorious one-two punch

There’s nothing better than golf on pure links. Tennis on clay is close, though.

6 – Perhaps because they love to complain

Riddle me this, Batman: How come today’s elite players lick their chops and take aim at the greens of those par-4s that are set up at 320 yards yet scream about trying to reach a par-3 green that is 289 to 300 yards away. (That would be No. 8 at Oakmont in this week’s U.S. Open.)

7 – Style tip

Of this, I am convinced: The smaller the club logo, the sweeter the look.

8 – Widen your horizons

If you are going to name your golf holes, take note that we are saturated with No. 18s called “Home.” No more being accepted at this time.

9 – Could not keep them together

Found a new divot tool that met my standards, except it was magnetic and kept sticking to my favorite Scottish coin. Had to keep them in different pockets and good gracious was I discombobulated. Solutions are being noodled.
