GOLF COURSE PHOTOS -- In case you think you are in charge of course set-up at Kelly Greens GC in Nahant, this sign at No. 7 tee box lets you know otherwise. Reader Brian Green forwarded the photo, which is a pretty strong reminder to golfers to play it as it lies. Thanks to Brian and a reminder to those who come across a golf course sign that catches your attention, send to jim@powerfades.com.

Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Maybe it was clever 15 years ago, but enough

Ending your Tweet with “Asking for a friend” is the definition of lame and tired. Step up your game, friends.

2 – Thinking left was not right

I am right-handed with pretty much everything – writing, throwing, working the clicker, removing my golf ball from the hole after making the bogey putt. Except for unscrewing jars. I always use my left hand to unscrew jars. Crazy, no? But that thought gnawed at me, which wouldn’t be all that bad, except that I was in the middle of my takeaway on an 87-yard third shot on a short par 5. Pretty much explains the subsequent chunk that led to a bogey.

3 – Back in real time

Nothing says, “Hey, the major championships are over for another year,” than four days of 87-degree weather and scores that are 23-to-27 below that.

4 – It’s the caddie in me

Asked what the weather forecast was for the day, I mumbled, “down and off the right.” She didn’t seem to like that answer, but I’ve always wanted to say that.

5 – They serve a purpose

Tell a golf buddy you’re going to play a cozy little “pitch ‘n putt” golf course and he laughs, telling you it’s not golf. Then you play with that same golf buddy and watch him chunk short irons, miss greens badly, and three-putt all day. Cool and dignified, you never ask him if he’s ever thought of doing something silly like going to a “pitch ‘n putt” golf course.

6 – Quite a road for Woad

Lottie Woad. She won the 2022 Girls’ Amateur Championship in the U.K., the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur, and the 2025 KPMG Irish Women’s Open. But if you’re wondering what she’s done lately, she turned professional and won her first start this past Sunday, the Women’s Scottish Open.

7 – Backboards must go

There should be a statistical category for Grandstands Hit in Regulation. That’s how many PGA Tour players let it rip on closing holes, knowing wildly errant shots can give them a free and easy drop.

8 – Revisit the Kitayamas

It’s always a cool feeling to see fun stories gather success. Kurt Kitayama’s PGA Tour win this past week came with brother Daniel on his bag and their relationship was featured in a “Power Fades” story in 2023. Cheers to them both. http://bit.ly/4lZs6ck

9 – Hard to deny the disconnect

Joaquin Niemann winning five times on LIV golf in the same year he shoots 10-over in 12 rounds of major championship golf, missing two cuts in four starts against a field of big leaguers pretty much explains the absurdity of what is going on in our pro golf world.
