2-way tie for lead at State Senior 4-ball

With rounds of 4-under on different golf courses Tuesday, the teams of Tai Lee and Jim Bandera (67 at Walpole CC) and Ray Richard and John Hadges (68 at Foxborough CC) share the lead entering today’s final round of the Massachusetts Senior Four-ball Championship.

Lee (Granite Links GC) and Bandera (Plymouth CC) will play Foxborough today; Richard (Willowbend) and Hadges (Thorny Lea) will move over Walpole CC.

Two teams shot 3-under 68 at Walpole CC to sit a shot off the lead – the Fasick Brothers Jon (New England CC) and Carter (Westborough GC) and Kevin Carey and Joe Walker of Dennis Pines. If those names sound familiar, it’s for good reason. The Fasick Brothers are not only going for their third straight Super Senior title (they have a three-stroke lead over the duos of Jim Ruschioni and Paul Nunez, and Claude Hoopes and Don Anderson), but the coveted Overall & Super Senior double-dip; Carey and Walker won this competition when it was last held, in 2019.

Lee and Bandera made six birdies against a pair of bogeys, while Hadges played beautifully, making four birdies on his own ball to give his team a share of the lead.

Some qualifying updates

Taylor Kay-Green of Charles River CC shot 70 for medalist honors in a Massachusetts Open qualifier Tuesday at Pleasant Valley. Shamus Landers (Boston Golf Club) and Brian Foley (Cyprian Keyes) had 71s to join the list of 11 who advanced to the championship, scheduled for June 14-16 at Oak Hill CC in Fitchburg . . . . . Old friend Jay Williamson, the onetime baseball and hockey player at Trinity who defied long odds and made it onto the PGA Tour for 15 years? Well, he’s 54 and still grinding away at his passion for golf. He shot 71 at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan., to earn first alternate in a U.S. Senior Open qualifier. Another competitor in that qualifier was onetime long drive stalwart Art Sellinger, who shot 79. The U.S. Senior Open will be held July 8-11 at Omaha CC in Omaha, Neb.

Buck, Johnson T-3 in Amateur Alliance

At the Amateur Golf Alliance at Forest Creek GC in Pinehurst, N.C., Megan Buck (73-73-79) and Shannon Johnson (78-77-70), who play out of Thorny Lea GC in Brockton, finished at 225, tied for third. Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Fla., was the winner, at 222. In the senior division, Pam Kuong (232) of Wellesley Hills was T-5, while Sue Curtin (240) of Westwood finished joint 16th . . . . . Team Massachusetts came up short in a bid to successfully defend the Griscom Cup. The Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia won the 118th edition of the inter-city team competition, with the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association second. Chelsea Curtis of The Country Club served as captain of the Massachusetts team that included Lindsay Cone (Granite Links), Melisa Hem (Dedham Country and Polo), Danielle Lee, (Renaissance), Jennifer Keim (Bayberry Hills), Krystal Knight (Bradford), Allison Paik (Ledgemont), and Tracy Welch (Winchester CC).

57th Hornblower set for Plymouth CC

Shannon Johnson, two-time winner of the New England Women’s Amateur and the 2018 Mass Golf Women’s State Amateur winner, will tee it up Friday and Saturday in the annual Hornblower Memorial at Plymouth CC. She’ll be the only woman in the field of 156. Played on a vintage Donald Ross design to a par of 69, the Hornblower annually attracts a stellar field and that will be true again this year. Defending champ Nick Maccario and 2018 winner Matt Parziale are among those who’ll tee it up.

Oh, how he loved the game

Should you drive past Presidents GC in North Quincy and have a chance to remove your cap and offer a moment of silence in honor of Bobby Meehan, please do. The Milton resident and native of Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, passed away May 26 at the age of 75. Few golfers loved the game and Presidents GC quite like him.
