Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – My fault for asking

For chuckles I googled “rhythm, tempo, and timing” and here’s what AI sent back to me: Things you need, but don’t have.

2 – It’s steam, not news

Some things never change, because nearly 30 years of talking to professional golfers leaves me thinking that this is consistent: Listen to them complain about set-ups, just don’t write it.

3 – Could listen all day to the man

Padraig Harrington is a marvel. An absolute marvel. Here was one of a half-dozen gems he delivered after he stumbled badly on the back nine and gift-wrapped the Senior PGA Championship to Angel Cabrera Sunday: “At the top of the backswing, I’m thinking, ‘Don’t push it down the right.’ Very simple. (But) if I had the ability to do what I say, I would be the best player in the world, wouldn’t I? Unfortunately, I don’t.”

4 – Fowl play

Watching Padraig call a rules official over to discuss the debris left behind by a bird and whether or not he could remove it got me wondering if it would be OK to write this: Players are asked to repair their pitch marks, but birds could care less about repairing their sh#* marks.

5 – Well, which is it?

Here’s the crazy thing about slow play. Everyone wants a policy implemented . . . until tournament officials go to enforce it, then everyone thinks it’s unfair.

6 – Thanks for asking . . .

Sergio wants an exemption into the U.S. Open. Ah, that’s a hard no. Or maybe a HARD NO.

7 – Think it’s easy, you try it

It remains an inspiring sight, watching Shingo Katayama play 18 holes in a cowboy hat. Especially when the wind is buckling pretty good and he has the stampede straps on.

8 – Help me, I’ve fallen

Likewise, it remains a befuddling look when elite NBA athletes tumble to the floor and need at least two teammates to pick them up. Really, is it that difficult to pick yourself up off the floor?

9 – Oh, my

Gary Player, 89, saying on a podcast that he’s beaten his age 3,349 times in a row is funny. Until you realize he’s serious.
