Jim McCabe's front 9 musings . . .

1 – Neighborly of me

Two large piles of raked leaves are still sitting on my front lawn out of respect to those who couldn’t make it up to the mountains for some leaf-peeping. So, peep away.

2 – Truth

By the way, rake leaves in a robust wind and you get nowhere; play golf in a fierce wind and you discover rhapsody.

3 – It’s one-to-one with golf scores

Went to put in a 103 from a round of golf in Ireland. The golf committee looked at the card and said it added up to 92. “Yes, but Euros-to-dollars exchange rate make a 92 a 103.” Committee wasn’t impressed. Request denied.

4 – Street lights rule your behavior

Crazy how after so many decades we often use the same guidance, though in different ways. The street lights, for instance. I used to have to be in when they went on, now I go to bed when they go on.

GOLF COURSE SIGN -- Thank goodness he and his companions didn't follow the instructions here because longtime friend and avid reader Phil Robinson said Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown, N.Y., was a true gem. (Robinson said the sign was likely intended to keep young hotel guests nearby from using the area for wiffleball games.) While the attraction to Cooperstown is the Baseball Hall of Fame, Robinson and his fellow golfers gladly made the long drive just to play this Devereaux Emmet design. As always, should you come across a golf course sign that tickles your fancy, feel free to send it to me at jim@powerfades.com.)

5 – Time’s a wastin’

Lads, it’s autumn, leaves are falling and dusk is coming earlier each day. The window for daylight is shorter. Help the cause and keep it to one practice swing per shot.

6 – Pure beauty

The world might be obsessed with mallet putters, but nothing will ever be as pretty as Ben Crenshaw in synch with his “Little Ben” blade.

7 – You wouldn’t want to sleep there

Consider this a PSA of supreme importance: Nights are getting cooler, so let’s get the clubs out of the trunks and into warmer quarters.

8 – Lower and lower

When you finish 20-under and barely make it into the Top 10, or your Sunday 65 pretty much is like treading water, and when everyone breaks par easily . . . well, you've landed at the autumn portion of the PGA Tour schedule.

9 – This memory will not go away

Speaking of autumn golf, the landscape used to be quite rich when the old Dunhill Cup / Alfred Dunhill Cup was alive and well and robust with flavor from 1985 to 2000 at The Old Course. It was a blast to watch in early October and the memory of Tiger Woods missing a short putt on the 18th hole to lose to Santiago Luna, then ranked 190th in the world, and allow Spain to advance to the finals makes me long for this tournament on a yearly basis. Loved it. Bring it back.
